Los Angeles is arguably the birthplace of the beach culture thanks to its white sandy shores, and fantastic climate throughout the year. The TV Series Baywatch took the idea of the body beautiful in California to a new level, and made the beaches of Los Angeles as much a place to be seen as a place in which to relax.
Whether you want to surf, sunbathe, or just walk along the waterline, and let the gentle ripples of the ocean cool your toes on a hot Los Angeles day, the beaches of LA are at the heart of life in this amazing city, and no visitor should miss out on spending time there.
Los Angeles has more than 20 beaches for visitors to enjoy, and we list some of the best to help you to pick which ones to visit during your stay.
Zuma Beach, Los Angeles
Zuma Beach offers some of the best surfing in California, and was made famous in the Keanu Reeves movie Point Break. The beach is around 20 miles north of Malibu by road, and offers a number of services including lifeguards and a café as well as adequate parking. If you have not booked car hire in Los Angeles, or are pushed for time and still want to go surfing, Manhattan Beach is a more crowded but more central option.
Paradise Cove, Los Angeles
Paradise Cove is the perfect place in which to enjoy the traditional Los Angeles staples of sun and sand. The beach is private, and secluded, surrounded on all sides by cliffs that turn it into a fantastic suntrap throughout the day. Despite its compact size, Paradise Cove offers plenty of space to spread out and relax, as well as a top restaurant where you can enjoy a meal at sunset or a light lunch.
Santa Monica Beach
Santa Monica is one of the largest and most popular beaches in LA, and provides plenty of entertainment and activities as well as the sea and sand. You can spend an entire day exploring the shops or relaxing on the beach at Santa Monica, and it is very popular on the weekend.
Manhattan Beach, Los Angeles.
Manhattan Beach is famous for being the birthplace of Beach Volleyball, and there are regular tournaments here were you can see the sport being played throughout the year, as well as the annual world championships, which happen in spring.
Venice Beach
Venice Beach is a laid back strip of sand close to the centre of the city that is popular with surfers and sun worshippers alike. It is also where you will find the famous Muscle beach Gym where body builders strut their stuff in the sun to show off for spectators.
